Iron Hans Revelation: Background & Facts

The tale “Iron Hans” was collected by the Brothers Grimm as number 136 in their anthology. It tells of a wild man captured by a king; a prince frees him and later receives his help. Iron Hans has supernatural powers and is often interpreted as a forest spirit. The prince works in disguise at the court of a foreign king for a time. In the end, Iron Hans reveals his true form as a powerful king. The tale is less well-known but rich in symbolism, first published in 1815 in the “Kinder- und Hausmärchen”.
